A problem with active pickups?

I was reading an article a few weeks ago I forget who it was on possibly Phil Lesh. But in it the guy said he quit using active pickups because of high frequency distortion he was getting when plucking hard.

Has anyone else had this type of problem and found a work around besides using a softer touch or switching back to traditonal pickups?

I've only had that problem when boosting the eq too much or setting the output of the bass full on and playing very hard (I set the volume on the bass at about 75% usually) Also, setting the pickups too high can do that.

It's never been a problem for me with any decent bass and I use both active and passive basses.
