A question about tube preamps

    If you have an amp with a tube preamp in it, or just a tube preamp by itself, can you get distortion or overdrive by turning up the gain? Is this bad for the tubes or the amp? Does it work?

  3. Yes, it works. No, it's not bad for the amp. It helps if you have a hot signal going in.
     
  4. You can overdrive tubes. We do on my dads 1966 Fender. I must say it is a very crisp overdrive tho. So if you're looking for a phat sound, double it with a distortion pedal.
