A single repeating riff from Mike Oldfield - I can't figure it out.

So there's a riff I'm hoping someone here can post a video of how to play it. I'm stuck.

It's at 0:45 of this video.

You can see also at 2:05 that Mike does a glissando (slide) from the seventh fret to the fifth fret. Unfortunately my ear and abilities are not very good so I don't know how to dis-articulate anything this fast.

Anyone care to help an amateur?

Lunch time I took a quick look at that riff at 0:45.
    Here is my rough transcription.

Here is a sound clip from Guitar Pro 6 at 70BPM.

WOW!! Thank you so much. Now, THIS I can break down and practice. This is really great. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to figure this out and to share the riff in written and recorded forms. That's very generous of you. : )

I still have to figure out what he's doing with the glissando shown at 2:05.

Also, I just found this trick and wow does it ever help. I can even see where they're placing their fingers.

    Cool!:hyper:

    Thanks for your hard work.

    Just my notes.

What I heard, what I saw on that youtube video, the bass player
    (a) slides from D to E - with Finger 4,
    (b) slides from E to D - again, by using Finger 4.
At a slow tempo that sliding even creates a la "shuffle" effect.
Also, that sliding back from E to D kind of "dies" on Eb/D#.

On that youtube video, the bass player uses different TAB for the last four 16th notes.

Okay, so I just figured it out, and ran through it once and then grabbed my iPhone to record it quietly while my girlfriend is sleeping in the room next to me.

    Here it is.

Hope your helps, if anyone else is interested. It's s fun riff and it covers most of the fretboard, AND it's a long song so it's z good test of both stamina and concentration.

If anyone else can figure out the first pulse, (how it's two sometimes and three the rest), let me know.

    Cheers

Thank you! I'll have to watch it close and catch all the subtleties now. This is groovy. Cheers.

Try the following left hand fingering:
The first time use the following left hand fingering:

    MoFingering1st.PNG

As you can see, your left hand finger 1 is on the 4th fret of the D string. In order to avoid that jump (nothing wrong with it!) try to play the next E note on the 7th fret of the A string with your Finger 4, and continue on with the same finger - Finger 4 - by using slides.

    MoFingering.PNG

P.S. You can also play those first two E notes with your Finger 4, but switch to your Finger 1 for the next notes.

Awesome. Yeah, that's much easier. I was just following what Mike was doing in the video, whereas you're doing what the guitarists are doing, which is much more economical. Cheers.

    Ha! I just found this.

It's just funny to see so many different approaches to the same notes, with everybody setting on different finger positions. Neeto!

I would not use the fingering from this video.

It's awkward as hell and it puts the accents in different places somehow. But it is one of the patterns available.

  16. WUTP strikes again :smug:
Seriously, someone needs to invent a TalkBass medal and ship him a whole bucketful!

P.S. Thank you for your kind words.

My biggest problem - I don't have enough time.
    Monday through Friday - it's usually only(!) in the morning before I leave for my 12 plus-hour workday with 2/3 spent outside, under the Texas Sun;
    therefore,
if I'm transcribing something with all those "nuances", I'm not (properly) exercising on the bass.
Yes, l remember my "bohemian" days many years ago, when I had all the time in the world to spend on Music, but...
    It's history now.
