Looking for possible issues for this. Noticed from a band recording last night that the tone of my A string gets significantly thinner when playing around the 9 to 12th frets. What are some potential issues (and solutions) that I could do for this? I was playing a Fender American Deluxe Jazz in active mode through a Ampeg SVT3-Pro and 4x10 cab. Could it simply be an EQ problem (had a drop in EQ around 300Hz to counter-act potential mud in the room) or something far more sinister?
String height and pickup height would be a first start. There are suggested starting points for most instruments. I would do a full setup on it and see if that fixes it at all.
That range of note is ~90-110 Hz. Does it do the same thing on those same notes on the E or D strings? +1 on a setup. Also (totally subjective here) is it a rosewood board? I have totally sworn off rosewood unless I play it and like that particular instrument. Every rosewood board I have ever had has had dead spots and places where the notes are thinner. And they were physical locations, because the same notes were fine on other strings. Also, I have had phase issues with every jazz bass I have ever owned in certain physical locations on the neck. In may be I have had lemons, or bad preamps, etc. Another things is change the strings. Maybe that string has an anomaly. Just IME. Good luck.
