Accidental, pre-Christmas, GAS!

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by mgl68, Dec 22, 2003.

  1. So my guitar player shows up at my house yesterday and says let's go for a long bike ride.

Awrighty, I say, since it was a wonderful Sunday morning here in Florida. An hour later we stop by an area music shop cause he wants to check out a digital recorder doohickee.

To pass the time I plunk around with a couple Fender MIM jazz basses, which are not all that bad, really. Then my attention turns to the source of my new-found GAS: A brand new MIA jazz, black. Pulled it off the wall and was immediately floored by how well it sounded and felt. Action was awesome, quick and responsive neck, just a beautiful instrument in all aspects. Maybe a little bland, as it's standard black, but still.

Now my whole damn life has changed, just three days from Christmas. I can't stop thinking about this bass, and it's all my guitarist's fault!

Best part is the price ... it's on sale for $699.00 with case and everything. Maybe I could even get them to go a little lower too.

How do I deal with this unexpected GAS? I feel like I really NEED this bass, although rationally I know I don't.

Maybe I'll just throw 'em a deposit and put it on layaway. Oh well, sorry my post's boring, but I needed to vent :)

  2. I can just tell you that you'll feel much better by the time the bass is yours.
If it's a really good deal, take it!
If time shows you that the bass is useless(I'm sure she won't be!) you can resell it for a good price.

    Merry X-mas!!!!!!!
    :D

$669 for a brand new MIA Jazz? I saw one at GC last Saturday for nearly a grand... I'd say get it, and if you don't like it, I'll find a way to buy it from you for the price you pay... Are you sure it's on of those brand new ones with the S1 switcher thing?

Also, what kind of fingerboard does it have?

  4. I don't think it's the brand, brand-new model with the switch ... if it is I did not even notice it. Also, it's a rosewood.

    Regardless, it plays SO nice.

    :)

  5. Dude,treat yourself...you obviously like this bass,go for it.

I was suprised when I read the price!!:bassist:

Yea, these S1 switches are hidden in the crown of the volume knob, it's one you push. As for the rosewood... oh well... i've been interested in a MIA jazz with maple fingerboard. oh well

What kind of music do you play? Maybe it's just my warped mind, but I always think of Strats and P-Basses when I think maple fingerboard. I would think maple would get too crisp a tone for a Jazz.

I love a J with a maple board. Best slap bass ever! And sounds pretty good fingerstyle and with a pick, too.

I'm only learning... Right now, I play whatever is given to me... I play for my high school shows and on occasion I sub in jazz band... I do want something more sturdy than my ESP.

I think I just like that maple fingerboard a lot because most Jazz fingerboards are rosewood.

One more thing, are there any MIA Jazz basses with block inlays? Just curious

Thanks... I also noticed that the Geddy Lee signature has a maple fingerboard with block inlays... but I don't think I'm going to get that. thanks for the help anyway

The Geddy is a great, mid priced alternative. I love mine. Picked it over 20+ American and nearly 100 MIMs that I looked at.

The reason I still have my Jazz is the maple fb. It's just... sooo.... my sound. No matter how rich and deep I eq that puppy, there's still this high-mid spank to it that stands out, and breaks up so nicely through my ampeg pre. I can go from mud to Geddy with my right hand. It's worth all the other problems I have with it (76 was not a good year for Fender. I think they had bourbon on tap at the factory that year.)

Still... STILL - if you've got the means, get that bass. Fenders are always a crap shoot on quality, but if you've found one that talks to you, get it. The fb contributes so little to the overall sound that I wouldn't worry about it. This could be a lifetime bass for you.

Just don't screw up someone else's Christmas so you can buy something for yourself. You'll come across many basses that beg you to buy them. There's a cherry-red Brubaker that tells me I'm a better player than I am. I want that fugger. But I'll have to pass, or SO won't be getting any presents this year.

  14. Get it. I mean a black j-bass is just timeless.

    bland? PUH-LESE!

look at what you've done, embellisher... now i've searched for threads on the GL bass and I've become quite interested... especially because of the price. i am curious about how to adjust the truss rod - would i have to remove the neck every time i do a set up?

    thanks

Yes, that is true. FWIW, I had to adjust mine when I first bought the bass, and haven't had to adjust it since. Going on three years now.

Well, at least I don't want to buy that (nearly twice as expensive) MIA Jazz as much anymore. Also, what the hell does FWIW mean? My guess is that it's "for what it's worth", but I'm just a noobitch

I bet you could talk them down from the $699. The old American series was discontinued and most of them are gone now to make way for the new ones with the switch.
