Played a local casino two nights over the weekend. We rarely see anyone from management when we play. Which is a good sign. Our drummer comes from far enough away that they always give us a room for him.

So before Friday's gig, I get confronted by the general manager about whoever is in our room is smoking pot - in a no smoking room. Which I find impossible, but ok, I'll help you investigate, I guess. I call the drummer. He's three blocks away at an Arby's. The guy - as far as I know him - never touches anything of the sort. Hell, none of us do. We'd all forget the sets if we did!

But, I guess the first step is always blame the musicians in the building. After all, if you smell it in the hallway, it's impossible to have been any other guest in any other nearby room. Gotta be the drummer. SMH.

Scene from the life of a young drummer/bass player (~30 years ago), early on the brink of a semi-meaningful relationship with a deeply religious, highly sheltered, very naive-about-the-world young lady who put far too much stock in the stereotypes she heard about us:

    "So you're a musician..."

    "Yes."

"So you drink and do drugs?"

    "No."

"Are you sure? I've always heard musicians get drunk and do drugs..."

    "Not me."

"Hmm. So you have tattoos and piercings then?"

    "No, I don't."

    "You don't??"

    "No."

"Are you sure you're a musician?"

"Two instruments in three different bands... Yeah, I'm pretty sure." *

"Well... so you're playing all these shows everywhere, late at night, and I bet you have a lot of girls you have sex with all the time, don't you?"

"Look, I told you I don't do drugs or have any tattoos..."

    * It's also worth noting this conversation took place immediately after a rehearsal. In my car. With several pieces of my drum set filling up the back seat. :wacky:

That pairing didn't last very long. :roflmao:

  3. I'm not surprised. She was pretty clear about laying out the reasons she was attracted to musicians.

She had quite a few issues, but I was not the solution to any of them. In then end, I considered it a bullet dodged.

Well, despite Sheldon Adelson’s efforts, it is legal. Even if you’re in a ‘non-smoking’ room, the scent could waft in from anywhere. I would have asked for the guy’s proof behind the accusation.

And this, my dear folks, is how it feels all the time when people find out you're Dutch.

Well, that almost got me in trouble as I'm using my wife's computer, I'd just taken a drink when I read that. Spit take narrowly avoided.

When I was in my early 20s, I started dating a girl whose mother hated me because I played in a band. I have never done drugs, including smoking pot or cheated on anybody that I was in a relationship with but her mother didn't believe me. She said all musicians do drugs and chase women.

So what was the final results?...
Drummer guilty by being a musician?
    or
Was he guilty because he was out eating due to having the munchies?
    or
    Not enough evidence found?

I don't know. Arby's? Seems like you'd have to be high to want to go there.

Way back when I was single: I was trying to put the make on a lady at the bar. The waitress started in on me calling me names and explaining to the lady I was married to the keyboard lady.

It was one of those once accused, always guilty things.

GM said "Well, consider it (the situation) over." I was too dumbfounded (and not yet paid) to say much more.
