  1. I had Alan Gringean of ACG build me a bass, a left handed six string, with a singlecut.
Alan, as a lot of you will know builds his instruments out of Moffat in Scotland and is outstanding.
It is one of his Recurve models but in a singlecut style and it is one of the best made and sounding basses I have had the pleasure to hold.
Full specs are on the ACG website bass number 015.
    They play and sound amazing.

I choose the woods and the specs and it is a fantastic piece of art.
I am in good company, as Mr T Bowlus owns one too.

I propose no numbers for membership.

    Just Enjoy.

    Beautiful work...and my favorite preamp!

  3. They are beautiful but the pre takes a bit of getting use to if you are only familiar with bass, mid and treble cut and boost.
Once you suss out how to get it to do what you want, it's an astonishing sounding preamp and it is so sensitive.
What bass do you use the pre in?

  4. I definitely like them, although the poor currency exchange kinda keeps them on the wish list for now.

I have the 02 version, and it's in a Ristola six string. I've got mine running with some Delano Dual coils. Great combo.

Have you asked Alan for a price quote? You might be pleasantly surprised.

I'll have more to say in the official review (coming up in issue #1 of Bass Gear Magazine), but I am just thrilled with my ACG bass. Alan is a real pleasure to work with, too.

Here are a couple of quick shots:

  8. I have not, but not a bad idea. I've only seen them here, but his reputation is flawless and worth the price, even with a less favorable exchange rate. Forturtunately for me, I have a long enough laundry list for basses that the exchange rate should hopefully be a lot betteer when I'm in the market.

I'd love to have Alan build me a bass at some point. Given my experience with Wal, I expect the filter-based EQ would be amazing on a fretless!

Alan's basses look the bees knees! I'm a huge fan, shame I'm a poor student so it's going to be a while before I can commission one from him. oh well. must try his Pre-amp some time though.

This is a club I may be joining. I certainly appreciate Alan's basses. May be getting one.
If you start giving out numbers, I'd like to reserve #7...

    Wow, that is stunning.

For those of you who've bought - what did shipping from the UK to USA run, and did you have to pay an import tax?

Also, how's access to the upper frets?

No idea about shipping, but drop Alan a mail.

Access to upper fret? Superb. Not really a upper fret guy, but the asymetric neck and cut on mine makes it really easy.

    Oh yeah...

  20. My build is coming along at a good rate now. Almost all of the woodworking is completed and it just needs its lacquer coats, hardware and electrics. The woods have been wiped with white spirit here to give an impression of what it will look like when lacquered.
