Help! My local music stores don't carry these, therefore, I need to order without playing and this annoys the hell out of me. Why? Because I already have an acoustic 5 string, R.W. Jameson and the action is high and not worth fixing (I suppose, or maybe I just want a new toy). Yes, I have adjusted the neck. Anyway, does anyone know of any model that has some decent low (or at least adjustable) action? I know that the action will need to be higher than the electric. I played a friend's Dean P.O.S. and I don't remember the action being like mine. I don't like the dean because it was too freaking long. Please let me in on your experiences. I may be leaning towards the Ibanez 105 or the Michael Kelly (whatever the latest is).
I don't like the dean because it was too freaking long. For clarification..you'd like a shortscale 5 string abg with low action?
Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5 string. I have the 4 string version in gloss natural. It's nice looking. Top is really thin (at least on mine).
Acoustic Bass Guitars are a problematic lot. If the action starts out OK, it usually isn't long before it's getting pretty high. And it's not usually the neck that's the problem. The amount of tension of the strings puts an incredible amount of strain on the bridge. If it doesn't come off, it tends to bend the top into a hump, raising the bridge relative to the neck and thus raising the action. Additionally the shoulder of the bass around the neck joint may start to collapse inwards with the same effect on the action. If the bass is built with enough bracing to withstand these forces, it is likely that its acoustic output will be pretty spare. Achieving a balance is tricky and that usually means "expensive". Need I say more?
Harvey Citron AE5 Swallow (super $$$) and EABDGC AE5 Swallow (Acoustic/Electric 5-string) : Harvey Citron
Well as long as we're looking at "super $$", here's my two reigning co-champs: Marusczcyk Svoboda: Emerald Balor:
I'm a pick player, so it's usually on the high side compared to how finger players like it. Lowering the action on an ABG involves taking out the saddle and sanding it down and possibly filing the groves in the nut a wee bit.
Thanks, I knew that about the sanding and filing. My current bass' saddles don't remove and are individual. I filed them but it didn't really work.
This, but in right hand model? Not familiar with this brand. Really affordable too. $200 brand new for a 5 string! Wow! I haven't come across any with separate saddles. Yours must be an older one? I'd love to see it. I like how these have through bridge string connections rather than pegs. These appear to have the same preamp as some of the early Dean ABG
