I've been looking into buying an Acoustic Bass Guitar. Looking for something to play outside in the good weather with (unplugged) and also gig with (plugged into an amp). Jam with a guitarist/possibly hand drummer. I've done some research and like the sound of both the Boulder Creek EBR1-TB4 and also the Warwick Alien Standard 4 string. Looking for 4 strings, good build quality and something that sounds great/professional. At the moment leaning towards the Warwick Alien due to the 1.5" nut vs Boulder Creeks 1.75" nut. I don't have any way of testing these before I buy, so I'll probably just jump into it. Any help or experience playing either of these or others would be appreciated! Best, Stephen
I haven't tried the two ABG's you have mentioned but have tried plenty of others in that price range. I opted for the Fender Kingman which felt the most comfortable with the neck basically being a Jazz neck of which I am used to. This Bass is made in China which did put me off before I tried one, but the reviews online stated that the build quality is excellent which I confirmed once I tried one. It sounds great with La Bella White Nylon Tapewounds.
If you can find a year 2000 to 2002 Olympia by Tacoma, you won't regret it. Quite affordable in the used Market.
I have no experience with the Warwick, but the Boulder Creek is on my short list of ABGs that sound good and have at least some minimal acoustic oomph. I'd add the Breedlove Pursuit or Atlas to your list, especially in light of your neck width preference.
Will this really hang with an acoustic guitar and hand drum? The one I tried was one of the quietest ABGs I've encountered.
I tried mine acoustically at my local store with a piano and one of the staff banging on a tambourine and it was cutting through both of them.
I appreciate the input guys! I might head to the music store to try the Fender Kingsman. The Olympia Tacoma is intriguing too. Best, Steve
Yes, it is a Set-neck and has a Fishman Preamp, and the neck is much like a '64 Precision. (I have both) Good Luck!
I ended up going with a 2002 Olympia by Tacoma acoustic bass. Found one for a decent price and it seems like what i’m looking for. Anyone know where to get a hardshell case for it? Thanks again for your guys’ help in deciding.
