i've gone for a year and a half playing bass and i still don't get what the difference between an active bass and a passive bass is. I know it has something to do with the pickups.

An active bass has an onboard(installed on the bass) preamp. Passives basses do not. Also active basses are battery powered.

An active bass will have knobs for bass and treble and sometimes middle while passive only has tone.

With an active bass you can actually boost or cut the treble, mids, bass, etc. While with passive you can only cut the signal.
