Active, Passive?

  1. New to the bass and wondering what the difference is between active and passive pickups.

    There are passive basses and active basses, with the latter being accomplished in two ways-

    Passive you know; no preamp anywhere, just pickups (and vols/treble cut usually) to jack. Active refers to a preamp being present in the circuit.

    Active pickups is when a preamp is integrated into the pickup housing itself - a few mfrs. make them.

    Plain old generic 'active' is when the passive pickups' output is fed to an on-board preamp in the control cavity of the bass.
