I love AC's distortion tone in songvs like Get On Your Boots and the middle 8 of Vertigo? I know he uses all sorts or trickery to get the perfect tone but to get in the same ballpark can I use a distortion and blend in some clean? If so should I blend mostly clean with some high gain distortion, roughly 70 per cent clean, or a lower gain but blended 70 per cent distortion.

All of the above. Check over in the Effects forum for more, but basically there is a place for high gain, low gain, and whatever amount of blending. Plus you may not have found out yet, but there are some great bass-specific distortions that don't even need blending.
