Hey all, in my new band, I'm going to be playing touch style bass (probably a Warr artist 8 or 12) and will pretty much be taking the position of both bassist and heavy rhythm guitars. My rig is probably going to be something like an VT-300 into an Epiphani cab (I just returned my mesa rig which wasn't really cutting it w/ my EB 5 String). I'm going to have some other processing (compressor, dbx subharmonic system, and probably TC electronics g-force). However, one thing I know I'm going to need is a good unit for creamy yet heavy sounding overdrive. Since there isn't going to be someone in this band to play heavy sounding guitars, I need that sound w/o sounding like I'm just clipping out. The valve head is already going to give me a buttery sound, but I need something for big, smooth, guitar like overdrive. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Billy Sheehan from MR. Big has stereo outputs on his bass. What he does is overdrive the high end and keep the low end clean. You don't have stereo outputs, but you could split the signal from your bass.

IMO, I don't think you'll need an added pedal to get the overdrive you want. Let the VT-300 dish the overdrive out for you. I play in hard rock/metal band with another guitar player and when he goes into his solo's, I can pretty much hold down the rythym with my SVT. I get a nice sounding overdrive that fills in nicely. You'll never miss that second guitar player. Drive that amp to it's fullest!!

If you're set on a pedal unit, I'll recomend the Sansamp Bass DI. Distortion pedals suck to much of you're low end. I'm not a big fan of these.
