So I was approached by a friend of a friend who offered a trade and I'm calling on you my beloved not so Hivemind to weigh in. He's offering a MIM mustang bass for my Gibson SG. Is this a fair trade? Or is this one a bad deal and should I turn it down?
Depending upon Gibson’s age, condition, I’d ask for cash too. MIM is well made in any category but their prices stay somewhat flat for resale…with (very) few exceptions.
What the previous posters said. Can you tell us a bit more about the SG so the price difference between the two can be evaluated ?
So my Gibson is a 2006 in pretty great shape no dings or dents some light scratches from play no buckle rash. All original parts. The mustang is a ventera (not sure if I spelled that right) and that's what makes it a comparable trade (according to him) his is also light ware and all original parts.
I dunno that Gibson SG sound is pretty sweet. My AP Mustang would probably be a fair trade but if you do it I would ask for cash too.
What model SG? I can’t see a vintera bass being worth more than $500 used. A standard SG is worth at minimum $800.
A brand new Vintera Mustang is $950. A brand new SG Bass is $1500. Enough said. I'm with @WillyWonka here. There's a minimum of $300 difference between the two in that particular scenario.
Thank you all for your input. I'm going to say thanks but no thanks. Your input as normal is well appreciated.
Depends on condition of your SG but your SG was much more expensive new than that MIM Mustang Bass. He needs to put some cash with that bass to make an equitable trade. Here are the new prices on each for 2021: Fender MIM MUstang bass (new) - $699 Gibson SG guitar (new) - $1499 to $1999 presuming you don't get into specials and limited editions. So it looks like his bass new is half the value or less than your SG is new.
