All I've ever played for the last 30 years are Rotosound RS66LB (med light) roundwounds. Does anyone make a flatwound with the bite, brilliance, and presence of the Roto's? I realize this question may have been asked and answered a thousand times here, but I'm a newbie (if that's a legitimate excuse). Thnx
Flats are intended to *not* have the highs of round-wounds. Flats emphasize the "fundamental", whereas round-wounds have a much more significant "harmonics" component. You may care to start with the FAQ. About the 4th thread down in the strings (this) forum. Lots of great stuff there!
Thanks, I appreciate someone responding. Ya know, I scrolled through the FAQ's before I posted in here (I'm such an obedient little soldier), but must've missed the flat/wound topic. I was aware of the typical "brightness" quality of rounds, but thought there might be a new, whizbang flat technology that made them comparable. I guess not. Thanks again!
the halfrounds would be the middleground but i heard they are more or less very simular to roundwounds.
just read a thread on here about Steve Harris signature Roto's, they are flatrounds with very high tension and are brighter than most if not all other flats....fyi
It seems to have been covered so far, yet I post anyway... Rotosound flats have a rep of being brighter than other flats but, of course, that's relative. Half rounds feel great like flats, but still retain some roundwound snap. Check out speddling's post in the thread below. He links to some MP3's of SIT power flats. They sound great. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94517
definately just regular flats! All the MP3s in my link below except the 1st 3 are with SIT flatwounds. I put some PowerFlats on briefly before putting the 'beta test' rounds on last month. I'll be putting the regular flats back for a jam on Sunday... I think
