Hello, i am new here. I am a singer songwriter who plays bass as well. I have a small home studio where i record my original material. A good friend gave me his fender squire p-bass, 20th anniversary. He swapped out the original pickups and put a few aguilar jazz pickups in. The sound isn't bad actually, keep in mind that this is only for recording. But... the friend that gave me the p-bass usually plays an older G&L L-20000 series E, and wow, this bass is not only a dream to play because of the low action, but the sounds i can get from all the switches lol Its really a rock solid instrument. Because i am not a full-time bassist, i definitely need something that plays with ease. Ive been looking around online at used sites, and they seem very hard to come by ? Little by little i have collected the gear i really want, and the G&L is one of them. Any advice out there as to where i can look for the older G&L L-2000 series E ? any help would be awesome, thanks a lot, Derek.
One on reverb right now. G&L Vintage 1981 G&L L-2000 Active 4 String Bass Actually, there's another one on there, too.
Guitar Center on 14th Street in NYC has one, I believe. 1985 for $1100 or something like that, black on black.
G&L L-2000 Series E 1981 USA Natural Nitrocellulose This one has the original neck and bridge, nice touch. I would watch Ebay and Reverb.
Don't know what your price range is but you can get a brand new CLF Research L-2000. I got lucky and found this '81 beauty on Ebay last week. This one was exceptionally clean.
I appreciate all of the kind replies, and pointing me in the right direction I just snagged an L-2000 series E and I am excited. Now I have to figure out the date from the serial number because I’m not thrilled with taking the neck off. It also seems like the small colored toggle caps are missing, anyone know where i could buy a few ?
I actually went down there to play that one it was great, but i was trying to get one from 1981 or 82, and for a little less money.
Yours looks to be in excellent shape. Much luck and enjoyment with it!! I have an '81 L2Ke in Mahogany. Unfortunately the original pre gave up the ghost not long after I got it and I was able to replace it with the current bass harness from G&L. It's great to have/use real factory parts. P.S. It came to me with a later neck that needed work so I decided to drop in a Moses. It is a beast.
Yes i am excited, i have been looking for the right wood combination, color and in good condition, with a price i can afford lol My guess is this is a 1981 or 82, either way i am happy as a clam. Now you have me searching for spare preamps lol
Well, play the daylights out of it! I am sure you will be more than satisfied. Just remember that if the situation ever comes up that you need anything G&L check with them. They are very accommodating. Very nice folks there!
So the bass arrived today and the preamp doesn't work :-( I changed the battery just to make sure. So I'm waiting for the seller to get back to me. In the meantime, how expensive and how hard is it to find an original L-2000 preamp ?
What exactly do you mean by doesn't work? As in there is no change in output when using the passive/active/active+treble boost toggle?
Forget the original pre, you won't find any. While they are working it's fine, but they were prone to some weird things once they start to go - like picking up the radio.... G&L sells the current harness they use, which is the improved design. I put one in mine and it sounds great. It's on the website store - $119
