I recently got the Markbass 121P 12" Combo and so far it's been really impressive. I have a big gig coming up next week and I'm just a little afraid of pushing the combo beyond it's limit so I've been looking at adding a second cab. I notice a couple people with 121P and Epifani UL112 stacked. But I notice the sensitivity is slightly different (i.e., 121P 99db and UL112 100db). Can you guys tell me if the UL112 is better than getting a UL110 (99db) rated at the same db? What would be your choice? Epi UL112 or UL110 or MB 121H or Shroeder Mini12light.
    Thanks for your assistance.

According to the audio scientists on here, matching driver sizes is the way to go. But I usually play out with that combo on top of an Ampeg B-15 cab, and I dig it quite well, so I think there's really no bad answer here. I'd worry less about SPL's and more about tone at the very least.

  3. The UL110 is a great sounding 110, but it's a 110... much more compressed and 'boxy' sounding than the more open 112UL (more low end).

That being said, if you like the tone of your MB combo, IMO and IME it's usually a good thing to add another 'identical' cab. That way, you get 'more of the same tone' with a more open low end and more volume.

If your heart is set on an Epi, it would the be 112UL all the way versus the 110UL for electric bass if you are looking to add some low end along with increased volume. The MB 112 in that combo has plenty of punch already IMO.

Regarding sensitivity ratings, those are usually not very accurate anyway. Very low versus very high SPL (i.e. 96 versus 103) might cause some problems (unbalanced tone and very different cab voicings, etc.), but the SPL differences you quote are probably meaningless.

I use an Epi UL112 with my 121P. Great conbination. I like it
almost as much as my UL110/UL112 stack, and that's saying
    alot.
When you put the 121P up on another speaker, it tends to
speak more like a 1x10 box. The UL112 adds some depth to
    the sound.

  5. That's what I would have guessed.... the mid presence and punch of the MB112 combined with the wider, deeper, smoother voicing of the 112UL would have a similar 'feel' to it as the punchy little 110UL on top of the 112UL.

Man, the MB121P/UL112 combination gets LOUD! That will work just fine. Personally I would prefer another Markbass cab for consistency but the UL112 works great.

Thanks for the feedback! I originally was going to just get the Markbass 121H 12"cabinet to add some volume. It's way bigger than UL112. But MF has it backordered to late September. I'm out here in Hawaii so I can't try anything and I have to order blind and deaf everything. Everybody seems to like the UL112, I read somewhere in the forum that they now maybe heavier than 30lbs is that true? I just want a little bit more volume so I don't have to push the 121P combo over it's limit. Do you guys think I can get away with just the UL110 and having both the combo and the 110 on the floor or is the magic combination a no brainer with the UL112?

  8. From a post on another thread, the new UL112 with the different grill cover now weighs about 34 pounds... still nice and light.

Yikes. 4lbs is not a killer but it does make a difference up and down two flights of stairs. Why don't these manufacturers be up and up with the customers and put the right specs. I've been burned by companies like EuphonicAudio several times. I guess that means the UL110 is not 22lbs either. Is Shroeder specs accurate and maybe I should look at the Mini12light?

One thing to consider may be a Markbass Traveler 2x10...8-ohm box, same weight as the Epi and the same size as the 121H. You could also pull the head out of the combo and use the 2x10 for some gigs if you wanted. Same tweeter as the 121P. Just thinking out loud...

I was considering a mini 12 until I read somebody's came in a bit overweight...about 4 or 5lbs. Not that big a deal, but it is when you are talking 25lb printed specs.

    That was here:

I agree with you, the following are the most fudged statistics in the business:

    1. Cab weights
    2. Amp ratings
    3. Custom bass lead times! :)

Gee, now I'm disappointed. I had a UL210 that weighted in at 38lbs just 1lb off their spec. which I can tolerate. But 5+lbs is just not right. Last year I bought a SWR SM900 with a spec weight of 26lbs when I got it, it was 35lbs which really piss me off. I called Fender and they told at first that I was wrong until my dealer gave me the invoice for the actual shipping weight at 45lbs. But they didn't do anything to make it right, neither did EuphonicAudio when I bought their combo rated at 47lbs and it weighted in at 56lbs.

Ok having said all that what should I get that is light and loud?

    UL110 (22lbs) now ????
    UL112 (30lbs) now maybe 34lbs?
    Shroeder Mini12Light (22lbs?)
Markbass 121H (33lbs so far MB specs have been pretty accurate)
Additional Markbass 121P Combo (30lbs and will give me a backup amp)
    Genz Benz 10" cab (18lbs?)

    Your feedback is appreciated! Thanks.

  12. Epi's weight specs were right on the money. They just changed the design a couple of months ago, and they haven't updated the spec's on the marketing material.

I again would not think a single 10 is going to get you where you want to go as an extension speaker. The Genz Shuttle cabs are nicely made, and really lightweight, but the 112 really lacked 'balls'. Given that, unless you are using it purely for rehearsals or very small gigs, the Genz 110 (nor the Epi110) would be my choice.

The Epi112UL is still quite lightweight, and they really do sound good... that would still be my call, unless you could literally get the identical cab that is part of your MB combo as an extension (especially if it had a tweeter attenuator!)

Has anyone confirmed what the weight difference really is on the UL112? I want to get it, but if it's in the 35lbs range it's getting up there and not to far off from my original UL2 210 which I sold to get a little lighter.

  14. There is a post on the 'Perfect Bass' sponsored area on this site about someone who just got one and weighed it. You might want to follow that thread. I've sent an email or two to Epi asking for the new weight spec's, but have not heard back. I assume they aren't in a big hurry to tell the world that their Ultra Light cabs have gotten heavier:meh:

Given that a TBer weighed the new UL410 and found it about 9 pounds over published spec, 4 pounds for the UL112 seems reasonable to me.

Thanks KJung. I did follow up with that discussion. It's seems the UL112 is really heavier now. But it still seems to be the choice of all. Do you know if the sound changed when they made it heavier? I just wanted a little more headroom with the 121P and thought adding the UL110 would push the amp into 500w at 4ohms but will the UL110 start farting before the 121P?

    I own a UL110, UL112, UL210, and UL310. I like all of them.
The MB121P/UL112 kills my UL210 LMII combo. The thing I
like about it, is that it sounds good at lower volume as well as
when its pushed. Sounds simple but many boxes like to be
pushed before they open up and sound good. Try to find a
series 1 UL112. You can always take the LMII out of the
combo and use it with the UL112. Another good combo.

I guess I'm going with the UL112 because I can't wait for September when MF gets the 121H in stock. I just wish they weren't heavier now. BString, I thought you can't take the head out of the 121P because there's no cover?

I have tried to take my head out of my Mini CMD121P and I can't do it, but B String has claimed in the past that he's been able to do it or a friend has been able to do it. There definitely is no cover on it, though, so that's a concern when traveling with it. You'd have to get one made, which voids the warranty, so probably not the best idea.

That's one thing I really could have used, too. I think they easily could have made it removable. All they'd have to do is have some sort of strap in the back to hold it in.

I have both the head and combo. I didn't know about taking
the head out. My friend has one. Its VERY easy.
Take out the four screws on the back of the combo, then
just slide the head out through the top. The first time or so
it will be snug and you'll have to use both hands pushing the
amp up from the bottom. It gets easier every time.
The opening on the top of the amp is very smal. One of my
friends had a piece of steel or aluminium cut to size for about
$10. Another guy used a piece of plastic. Both used double
stick tape. It sits flush on the amp top. My opinion is that
Markbass could allow us to take the amp out. It makes no
sense not to. It makes no sense not to be able to attenuate
the piezo either. And still...... A GREAT COMBO AMP!!!
