Actually, I quite like the 'ashtray' - it's got a wierd-retro chic that fits in with the body binding and the pickguard / control plate. FWIW, I'm not so keen on the second one.

How about showing the original photo for comparison?

ps. Also FWIW, despite quite liking the look I wouldn't want to do the mod myself - it would limit playing approaches down by the bridge... there's a reason why so many players of the original took them off and Fender stopped including them as standard!

  10. ....agreed!

    Aerodyne looks better....'naked'!

Well, if you're gonna do one, might as well do the other! The ashtray by itself doesn't look good at all!

The combination of the P neck cover and the J bridge cover seems odd to me...
Only the bridge cover... could pass.
Only the neck cover... no idea, but I guess it would pass too.
But the combination... no, not for me.

As others stated : the Aerodyne Jazz wants to be naked.

I think it looks interesting, but if I got tired of it, which I knew I would, there would be those screw holes - that's the main reason for me not wanting to do this. I don't think it's too bad, but at the same time I do - the cheaper and easier way of not doing it seems appealing to me :) than ks guys

I think the limitations pickup covers impose on your playing options and dynamics completely overwhelm the aesthetic benefits. Maybe they were acceptable back when all bassists were expected to sound like upright players.

But at this point, it's like trying to convince all men to start wearing Bowler Hats once again.

I accept them, just not on the aerodyne jazz :D .
Marcus Miller has a neck PU cover on his j-bass and doens't sound like an upright at all... But that's what his preamp and other modifications are for I suppose :bassist:
