Aftermarket Pickups?

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by r6mile, Mar 15, 2006.

  1. I was looking for some new pickups for my SX J-Bass, and I went to Bass Parts Resource. The Fender and Duncan pickups are very expensive, and I don't want to spend that much on pickups, so I found these http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/bpickup_aftermarket.htm (the MODERN STYLE BLACK J BASS® PICKUP SET). What does aftermarket really means? Are they worth it?

  2. i dont know if i can really answer your question, to me they just seem like upgrades for cheap pickups (squier, and yes SX in some cases, but i've heard those pickups are fine to most ears). but look at EMG selects or duncan designed instead of bass parts resource, they'll probly be better quality. just guessing though

  3. Actually, I think the SX pups sound pretty good, but If you're after Jazz style pup replacements for your SX on a budget, check out the EMG selects for sure.

I'm currently using them in preference to the (much more expensive) Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pups I have sitting in a drawer!

They have excellent build quality, totally shielded and epoxy sealed, they're a perfect fit, and sound great.

Quite seriously, I've A/B'd them in the same bass with SX pups, MEC pups and the aforementioned Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pups.

I prefer them to all of the above, regardless of their price.

    ;)

  4. Oh ok, I haven't tried any other pickups so I didn't know. I better keep them then ;) Thanks :bassist:
