Aguilar + Czech Spector?

  1. Ok, so here's the deal. I'm thinking about purchasing a brand new Spector NS5CRFM and adding an Aguilar OBP-1 preamp (by a qualified tech) at purchase time. My two questions for this situation are:

1.) Will this void the warranty (I assume that it will)?

2.) Would this be a worthwhile upgrade? I've heard a lot of people talk about there being a significant headroom increase from a 9v -> 18v switch, but how do the EMG pickups on the Czech match up with the Aguilar pre?

Nino, I can almost swear I've heard you talk about this combination before, so I'm definitely interested in hearing your thoughts. Also, anyone else that has any ideas feel free to contribute.

I wasn't 100% sure if this should be in basses or pickups, but I think this is probably the correct place for it. I guess I'll let the mods decide on that one. :D
  2. uh hello?

1)I beleive that this upgrade would void the warranty but Stuart Spector is a VERY reasonable mad. He did repair work on a NS-4 CR that I had & the time on the warranty was up & there was no charge. If you really want to know for sure, ask Stuart at He answers every question I've ever asked him on the phome or online.

2)I have an Aguilar OBP-1 in a Warmoth 5 string bass w/EMG 40 J's & it rocks!!!!! I have an extra OBP-1 & I want to put it in my NS-5 CR but I've been thinking about selling it. What I have found about the Aguilar is it is very bright & punchy with ALOT of growl!!!!! The bass sounds like a TIGER!!!!

P.S. I added an extra 9V battery to my NS-5 CR & the bass sounds VERY close to my USA NS-5. Either way you go, you will have a GREAT sounding bass!!!!! IMO< the EMG BTS preamp that comes in Spector Czech basses are great, also!!!!

  4. Alright thanks for the reply, Nino!

I think I'll probably just keep it stock for a while. Down the line I may add another battery to go 18v or add in the Aguilar. I figured I'll keep it stock for a bit so I can make sure it's nice and reliable (which I'm sure it is).

I'm sure part of the reason Stu did that work for you for no charge after the warranty was up was because the bass was a USA model. I could be wrong though.

Once again thanks for the reply, and thanks for being the person that turned me on to Spector basses!

  6. Wow... So you're telling me I can get a wonderful bass for a good price, AND great customer service?

Too good to be true! :D

I'm just glad that I started frequenting this board. Without it I would never have played a Spector, Stingray, or G&L for that matter. Now I own a Stingray (my fave bass right now) and G&L and am looking into getting a Spector. Wonderful stuff I tell you.
  7. I thought USA models had a lifetime warranty.
