Considering purchasing one of these.... I'm a huge Aguilar fan, owned a 680 that was stolen a few years back, was wondering if anyone has used the 659 for live settings much?
hmm almost missed this thread. I've been using my DB 659 in live stage settings for about 6 months now and am very happy with it. Nice warm thick tone thats very punchy. The EQ is very 'smooth' and may not be as drastic as some other units, but i use my preamp EQ'ed flat and when i do EQ, there is more than enough usable range for my needs.
I've not used my on a gig yet (just rehearsals), but I am very pleased with it. It is smooth and phat clean (as mentioned above), and is capable of providing a nice edgy sound if overdriven. It has a broadband boost for the bass and treble which I like. It is not a huge change, but enhances the sound in the chosen frequency range nicely. I think it provides a nice palette for effects. My only complaint is that the on/off switch is on the back. If you have it racked in a case that is deep enough for an amp, it is a pain to reach in from behind to find the switch. I do plan to purchase a power conditioner which can be used to sequence power for all of your racked gear, which should eliminate that.
I liked my DB659 a lot. I agree with Buffalo Bob's point regarding the on/off switch. It was kind of a pita to reach it, but the sound quality more than makes up for it. In one of my GAS attacks, I sold my rack mounted rig (with the DB659 included) and bought a DB750. While the DB750 is heavy, I still find it easier to manuever (I have it in one of the Aguilar rack bags). I haven't had the chance to play it on stage yet, but I'm hoping for good things.
