I just took delivery of a set of Aguilar DCB-G5 pickups.

After looking at them,I cannot see any indicator of which is the neck p/u and which is the bridge.
The wiring diagram does distinguish between the two.

But nothing on the pickups shows a difference between the two.
    A little help!

  2. Does one pickup have longer wires than the other? Normally neck pickups are further from the controls so they need longer leads.

It's entirely possible there is no difference between the neck and bridge pickups. They use EMG 45 size covers which are the same for both positions and they have bar magnets so they don't have to worry about pole piece spacing for each position.

I think the only way to be certain would be to measure the DC resistance of both pickups and if they differ by more than 1 or 2 percent, assume the higher of the two would be the bridge pickup. If you don't already have one, a volt-ohm meter is cheap and super useful for troubleshooting lots of things.

Both wire leads are the same length.

Figured I would end up having to do some ohm meter nonsense!
I wouldn't know how to read one if it killed me!

What makes you think they differ by anything but their position on the bass ?
It's likely what the manual means.

I'll go to their site and see if I can contact someone.

    There was no manual included.
    A wiring diagram.
    Yes.But no manual.
I think that they should include certain information for those who a not seasoned electrical installers.
Some things are not obvious to newbies.

  7. The pickups are probably identical but if you have a meter, here's how to check the DC resistance:
    1. Plug the test leads into your meter and turn the dial to the Ohms position (the little omega symbol). If your meter has several options pick the 20k or 200k range.
    2. Touch the red meter probe to the white wire on the pickup and the black meter probe to the black wire on the pickup (leave the gray wire alone).
    3. Check your reading and jot it down (I would guess is somewhere between 9k Ohms and 15k Ohms).
    4. Repeat the process for the other pickup and compare. Easy!

I would have to go BUY one first.:rage:
Then take a college electronics course.

    At any rate,I emailed Aguilar.
If it makes no difference which is which,I want to avoid having to buy a meter.

  10. You've already bought the soldering iron so we know you like to live dangerously. At least a meter won't severely burn you...although those probes are pretty sharp. :nailbiting::smug:

Well,I can follow a wiring diagram.
I hate to invest $$ in something I'm not likely to use that often.

I would suspect that they would be on top of things, and mark them if they were different. I'm nearly certain they're exactly the same, so there's no need to differentiate.

    I'm hoping that they are.
The I can proceed when the OBP-3 gets in.

For the record, you can't mess anything up by putting pickups in the unintended spot. Sometimes manufacturers will wind pickups a specific way in order to accentuate frequencies at the suggested placement, but there are no hard and fast rules saying that you HAVE to use a neck pup at the neck and vice versa. If you wire them up and they sound a little off, swap them. Easy peasy.

  16. Ok, I am in the facepalm hall of fame. In my parts drawer I actually have a set of DCB G4 pickups for one of many projects I will eventually get to.

Both pickups measure exactly 12k ohms.

So you have a Resistance to Ohm meters?

...see what I did there? SI Unit Burn!

I think @gebass6 may be wondering if one of the pups is supposed to be a little hotter than the other. If they're evenly matched just raise the one you decide to put in the bridge position a little closer to the strings.

I'm highly opinionated and extremely self-assured
    Sorry I'm late.

    They're the same.

Aguilar only makes the DCB. There is no "neck" and "bridge".
