The bass player for this afternoon's entertainment was playing what looked like an all plain gut set. Sounded like, too. I didn't get a chance to inquire, honestly didn't even think of it, but now it occurs to me that was not supposed to exist. His A sounded great, and E was good too. This was just good old bass playing - no slapping, no bowing, no thumb position.

I guess the low cost stuff from India is all plain gut, but from the one sample I've heard, those strings sound to me very short on sustain. What I heard this afternoon was enough sustain to give him plenty to work with, if that makes sense. And that nice crispy gut attack. My eyes must have been fooling me, right? there isn't an all plain gut set that would cut it for a pro country player?

Check out the strings from pure-corde http://www.pure-corde.com/en/
They make all plain gut sets. Higher tension than usual but still flexible.
Huge diameter. Low E is almost 1/4".

  3. German manufacturer Efrano also makes a complete set of naked gut strings. But it not the most popular set from them, so they are usually not in stock of resellers. They are also on the lighter side (except for the high C).
Most gut string manufacturers make naked gut strings in any size you want on request. Just ask them.

Lenzner makes plain gut E's (and A's); we sell them occasionally, but mostly to slappers. For more "regular" folks, the tone and pitch on a plain E tends to be a bit flabby and indistinct, especially in 1st position. Guys (and gals) playing Psychobilly usually seem less concerned about that, liking the feel and natural "click" they get from them.
