I just finished watching Eric Clapton's Crossroads 2013 and noticed the bass player from the Allman Brothers using something that looked like a Fender Road Worn P bass. I looked him up and sure enough he was. His tone was awesome. I guess if it's good enough for the Allman Brothers to play Madison Square Gardens then it's good enough for me. lol

I have been trying to convince myself that all I need is a Precision but I just don't know if I can do it. I've been playing an active 5 for so long…but I love the sound that guys like Pino and Jamareo Artis (Bruno Mars) are getting with their Precisions.

Not surprised. I have a 50's Classic (one of the old Poly ones) and it is a terrific bass absolutely stock.

In the video at about 39 to 40 seconds you can see the serial number on the back of the headstock.

I couldn't help noticing that practically every bassist on the bill used a Precision. It gave me pause as well.

Yes, P basses and strats. Simple instruments with some amazing talent.

Pretty narrow cross section of music though. How many non-fender/gibson guitars did you see? I see plenty of people on that bill that I like but absolutely zero that I would look to for anything remotely outside the box.

If Oteil was on that bill I'd suggest you dig deeper if you think no one on that bill would be found "remotely outside the box".

His work with Col Bruce Hampton would be good place to start.

I was at the 2010 Crossroads Festival, and Oteil played that gig as well.

Originally, the Allman Brothers Band was scheduled to appear. But Greg Allman had been waiting on a liver transplant and had his transplant surgery a few weeks before the gig, and the Allmans had to cancel. So the Tedeschi-Trucks Band played in place of the Brothers. Lo and behold, Oteil wound up playing bass with the Tedeschi-Trucks Band, and he had that same Road Worn Precision bass. And he sounded GOOD! So it would seem that he's been using the Road Worn P-Bass for at least 3 years.

I just picked up a used Fender RW from GC for what I feel is a great price: $448.00 I had to wait an additional 20 days before it cleared the remainder of the holding period for used instruments - but just got it. Yeah it's beat up, but it plays and sounds fantastic :D

Huh?? Wow, this makes no sense to me.

Warren and Derek are two of the best, and Oteil is a beast....you're either trolling or play metal.

Warren, Derek and Oteil are monster players that can and do go way outside the box. But that would not be appropriate for the musical style of The Allman Brothers band. Thus another demonstaration of their professionalism and skill, to play within the THE CONTEXT of the music

I guess if Fender was sponsoring my tour I would play pretty much what they handed me as well. The necks on these basses move to much for me, it seems like I am constantly adjusting the neck on my jazz. I thought I just had a bad neck, but my friends P is the same way.
