Not sure where this post should be so, hope this is the right place.

This is a more theorictical question than practical, but I was just wondering...

It's my understanding the standard tuning for a 7-string bass is:

    B-E-A-D-G-C-F

What is wrong with changing the C and F to B and E like a regular guitar?

    B-E-A-D-G-B-E

I just started bass as a second instrument (guitar being the first) and was wondering if anyone has tuned their 7-string this way, or if there is something inherently wrong with this type of tuning.

    Thanks.

I think it's a great idea. Hope your hands are big...

  4. I think that most of JT's basses are tuned like guitars. Not 100% on that.

yeah, i've been doing that since i got my first 7 in 93. works really well, and lends itself to a lot of fingerpicking guitar type goodness. that's my main tuning.

sounds good....all the whatever-it-is-that-appeals-to guitarists-about-their-chosen-instrument of the guitar combined with the awesomeness that is bass....

isnt a guitar wrong though? this has always bugged me, ya know when u tune it with the fifth fret thing, u have to move to the fourth fret to tune the b. y isnt it a c like on a bass? is it just for making chords easier??

i wouldn't say "just" - some chords would be impossible without that tuning.

tuning is just tuning, there is no hard-set rule - tune so that your instrument is easier to play. some tuning make some things easier and other harder.
