Alternate tunings for 8 or 12 string octave basses?

    I was just playing with my Whammy and I thought wouldn't it be great if I had an 8 or 12 string whose octave strings were tuned a 5th up/down? Admittedly, the applications will be limited but it sounds interesting nonetheless.

    Has anyone tried this? Are there any recordings of this tuning? I think 5th down would sound better (i.e. chunkier).

    Chris Squire tunes (or used to tune) his 8-string bass eE aA aD dG and uses that tuning at least on "Changes" off 90125 album.

    I've sometimes toyed with a similar tuning with my 12-string, tuning D and G strings with one and octave string (adD, dgG) and it sounds fun but I prefer the normal tuning since usually play a lot of power chords using D and G strings anyway.
