I noticed that Hartke has basses with aluminium necks? Has anyone tried these? How do they compare to wood/graphite? I'm not really interested in this bass, i just thought it was a novel idea and was curious about it.

It was more of a novel idea when Travis Bean and Kramer made Aluminum neck's in the 70's. One thing I always hated is that they are cold feeling generally.

People I've known who played Kramer and Travis Bean aluminum neck basses complained how they would quickly go out of tune due to changes in temperature: for example, going from a cold dressing room to hot stage lighting.
  4. ...and also the fact that the necks heated up considerably under stage lights.

...Or to look at it another way, if they were truly the "next best thing", they'd still be around.
