Hey Bassists, after reading for a while now i decided to start a thread myself. I have a beautiful ´12 American Jazz Bass Deluxe which i love, but have a problem with the N3 noiseless pickups. During rehearsal i noticed that the E-String is a little louder than the other strings and a little clanky (no fret buzz). I also hear this in our recordings (very low budget). I adjusted the pickup height and lowered it at the E-String side and it was getting a little better, but i coudn´t get an equably sound for all strings. When lowering the pickup at the E-String side the A-string gets too quiet. I heared of similar problems (small fretboard radius and no stagged pole pieces), but never had it myself with other basses and wonder that this is a problem with a new top of the line bass. Has anybody have a similar problem with the N3 pickups? Any ideas what i can do other than swap pickups? Sorry for my bad english
I had a 2011 and mine had that same clank to it. Even when the neck was adjusted properly it still had it in there. I traded it before I had a chance to swap pickups and see if that made a difference. From what I've read the N3 is what fender came up with after they ended the contract with Bill Lawrence.
Thanks for the reply. Has anyone made similar experiences with unequal loudness of the strings with the N3 Pickups?
[/B]I had the same problem (mainly with neck pickup) and clank on the E string. I changed strings and did a full setup by myself and now the bass play and sound wonderful. 1- Had Ghs Boomer, change for DR Hi-Beam 2- Put back pickups at good height according to Fender setup guide and according to my ears 3- Add a little bit relief to the neck (that was almost straight) 4- Raise (edit) the E (1 turn and half) and A (1/2 turn) saddles. And now... perfect!
It is on both pu but stronger on the Neck pu. nicopiano, thanks for the advise. I will have a look in the Fender setup guide and adjust the pickup height again. Do you think changing strings and adjusting the neck did helped with the described problem?
I think you can change strings, something it's a bad string in the set. And a good setup is always good. You may bring it the a good bass tech. For a bass this good, it's nothing to pay a little to get a perfect set up.
I changed strings several times and this didn´t helped. I also did several setup changes, but this did´t help either. I setup my basses to my preferences and since the clanky sound of the E-String is not caused by fretbuzz i think this is not a setup problem. The only thing i can imagine that might help with the problem in regards of the setup is to set all strings to the same height, but this is very uncomfortable as you can imagine and i don´t think that fender designed a bass that needs a setup like this to sound good. Can this be a problem with the electronics? Disfunctional Pickup, bad wiring or anything like this? I am not very familiar with the electronic of guitars and am not able to figure out what might cause a problem like this. Thanks for help!
