Went back to Guitar Center again in my continuing quest for my next bass. I have now heard that the noiseless pickups in the American Jazz have a "dummy" second coil that somehow squishes the hum that single coil pickups can produce. I like the tone better from a Mexican Jazz bass. These are not the "noiseless" type. Am I going to regret not having a noiseless pickup when I turn up my rig? My amp does have a noise gate if I should choose to use it (The Carvin R600)... Would that accomplish the same thing as the noiseless pickups? Thanks!
No, the noise gate won't do the same thing - a noise gate silences the signal when the volume is below a certain threshold, a threshold set high enough to eliminate buzz and humming when you don't play, and let through the notes you pluck (which hopefully will be louder than the noise). A humcancelling pickup cancels noise all the time, and not only when you rest. Also, rumour has it that the Carvin noise gate is pure poo. A humcancelling pickup you could take into consideration instead of the Fender noiseless ones is the DiMarzio DP149 Ultra Jazz - recieved praise in Bass Player's shootout and has an overall good reputation AFAIK. And I don't think the humming will be overbearing when you turn up your rig, it's worse if it's not grounded and/or shielded (like my bass - not humcancelling, not shielded, not grounded... gotta do something about that! ).
IMO The Fender Noisless P/u's sound like CRAP!!!!! No matter how silent they are, they sound like CRAP!!!!! Go for the MIM DLX!!!!! IMO much better sounding bass then the new MIA DXL w/Noisless.
Okay... That's enough for me. In the weeks I have been hunting for a bass I have not found anyone to say anything positive about those pups except for a salesman in hollywood. The best he could come up with was, "Umm yeah... I am buying a pair of those to put on my bass today too." MIM Jazz Deluxe it is. But Now I have to decide where to buy it. Next debate coming soon to a thread near you.
I'm currently trying a pair of Di Marzio DP149's in my V series Jazz, and so far I'm liking them. They are quiet as, and have a stronger low mid voice than the Fender 60's pups.
