if i have a nice preamp, should i just get any old power amp or are there special power amps made for basses?
  2. Pretty much any PA poweramp will do the job, that's what a lot of us here are using.

I'm sure a search would help you out more on this topic.

There have been endless debates about which types of power amp are best. Heavy ones or lightweight ones? Black ones or grey ones? The $299 ones or the $1299 ones? Can you hear the difference in a live situation? Probably not. My advice is to spend an amount of money on it that you are comfortable with and buy a brand that you have heard of before. I have used Peavey, Crown, Mackie, Stewart and QSC, and guess what? They all worked. Good luck. ;)
