My amp is an Ampeg BA-210SP (not the V2). I purchased it used.

It has a bad hissing problem. It hisses even when the bass isn't plugged in. The volume and treble controls increase the volume of the hiss. I took it in to the shop but it didn't hiss there.

It also makes crackling sounds sometimes, mainly when I play hard, even if the volume is all the way down to 1.

Check for snakes? (Yes, I've heard of snakes crawling into speakers through ports)

Is that the origin of "snake oil"?

It just may be your ear sensitivity. In more noisy environments you don't hear hiss because louder sounds mask quieter ones.

If you can't stand the hiss then a cheap thing to do is cover the tweeter with a pad of felt or cardboard on the grill cloth.

    When did the hissing start?

It's had the hissing ever since I got it. The hissing is very heavily affected by the built in effects. If the adjust on the effects is turned up, the hissing gets louder. Same with the level nob on the effects; if I increase them both near the top, it's very hard to hear any notes through the resulting static. ampegba210sp.jpg

So what did the tech test it with when you could hear no hissing?

I wasn't there for the main testing; however, I did hear him plug it in and play it, and they wasn't any noticeable hissing. However, there was music playing in the background, and that could have drowned it out.

I'm thinking that what seamonkey said was right, and I just hear it because I play in a quiet setting.

So, the snake is noisy in a quiet setting?

First gen cheap digital effects designed to sound decent but hit a price point rather than be high quality/low noise, combined with you going nuts with the knobs.

    Hi guys :)

:D Hissing is not a biggie.

When it stops hissing and starts to rattle you have a real problem!

If the hiss is changing from the environment,
possible external factors like noisy switch-mode power supplies in nearby appliances or lights.

Keep that effects level control down low if not using effects.

These have a piezo tweeter, don't they?
    Try disconnecting that.

Congratulations! Because of your efforts, a few dozen folks won't sleep tonight, at least without getting up every hour to check their cabinets for snakes. And the toilets - while they're up, might as well check the toilets for deadly water snakes.

To add to the creepy nature of this thread, it's not uncommon to find black widow spiders under the rim of rarely used toilets, especially on ranches and farms. It pays to check FIRST. ;)
