Im looking for an amp that will give at least 200 watts and sounds very smooth for upright bass. Nice highs and lows. Im using a Fender BassMan 100w right now and it sounds like crap when I plug in my upright with it. Not only is it not loud enough but the low ends are terrible and when i get too close to it, the speaker screams. I have a fishman B1 pickup. Im looking for something in the 500-700 price range. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks alot.

The Acoustic Image Contra is only slightly beyond your price range ($799 including shipping), and it has an ultra-high input impedance to match your Fishman. One of the reasons the Fender sounds bad with the Fishman is likely the impedance mismatch. There is an explanation of the problem at the bottom of my Preamps Page - http://www.urbbob.com/preamps.html - you may already have a device that could do the job.

I have the Contra shown at http://www.urbbob.com/accimg.html
