Ampeg B-15R vs. SWR Super Redhead

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Gunnar Þór, Jun 27, 2003.

  1. I saw these two amps in a music store today and I'm considering buying one of them. I haven't compared them yet and I want the TB community's opinion before I do, which one would you get and why?

They'd be seeing small to medium size gigs with me with at least two guitarists and a drummer so it'd have to be heard through that. They're both used, in good shape and the prices are almost the same.

    Thanks. :)

I love the sound of the Ampeg but I would not buy one for anything but a practice amp. In any band that has a drummer and a guitar/keys (even in a fairly small venue)it would only do the job at the lowest volume level. The Redhead would be way more versatile.

I don't know anything about the Ampeg B-15r, but the SWR RedHead is DAMN loud! 350 watts... I think that it is pretty damn nice...

I'd cast my vote for the Redhead (the amp, too). One of the original killer (I don't need no stinkin' stack) combos.

Another vote for the SWR. The combination of the Redhead and your MIM Jazz (just checked your profile) will sound great. I used to own a Redhead and when I played my de-fretted MIM jazz through it, the Redhead made the bass seem quite lively.

Might want to add SWR's Black Beauty and Peavey's BAM to that list of contenders for excellent combo's.

  7. I think that does it, when July rolls in I'm taking my MIM to that store and giving it a go. I'll try both, but the Ampeg's pretty much out because it lacks power. Unless it has the tone-of-death-from-hell I'm going for the Redhead.

Thanks for the heads-up, but neither cab is available in Iceland. I'd have to order them from overseas and that almosts doubles the price on anything. Not something I enjoy doing.
