Hi, I've got a Ampeg B12-N amplifier with a defective speaker. I don't think it's the original speaker. Does anybody knows what was the original speaker in this amplifier? Ceramic or alnico? Which speaker would be a good replacement for this amp? Thank you! Nick
The speaker that was originally in your amp will depend on what year it is. They used different speakers. They were 8Ω. An image or code on the frame might help determine what you have now. If you like the speaker, you can have it reconed. Check out http://www.fliptops.net for their recommendation. They will probably recommend an Eminence Delta 12A.
Hi, Thank you for replying. The speaker I have right now is a ceramic with no sticker, logo or date code. I also measured the impedance and it is 4 ohms so I believe somebody made a mistake by replacing the speaker. I sent Fliptops a message and they recommend to install a Eminence Private Jack 8 ohms speaker. This is a little bit strange to me since this is a guitar speaker but that might also work for the bass. Nicolas
Some people run 4 Ω speakers in these amps to get a little more volume out of them. BTW, the B-12N and B-15N use the same head. I have no experience with the speaker that fliptops is recommending. At one time Ampeg used the CTS 12", square magnet speaker. I've included a pic below from a 1966 model.
Hi, I removed the speaker and now I'm able to see the sticker on the other side of the magnet. What I've got is a Eminence JAY5120 121630B 67-04065 0063 at 4 ohms. This looks like a modern speaker. Are you sure we can put a 4 ohms speaker in these amplifiers? Thanks. Nicolas
