So I have an issue that is concerning me.

When I powered up my amp this weekend, it seemed to turn on as always. But couldn't get any sound out of it. I turned the amp almost all the way... nothing.

Then I turned the gain up and all of a sudden there was a "burst" or sudden jolt of sound coming through and then fine all night.

I'm concerned because last time this happened to me was with a different head and it died shortly after.

Does this sound like the relays not clicking on until enough signal in going through or is it a preamp/gain section problem?

Could be any number of things, but one easy thing to do is clean out the jacks in the fx loop. Plug a short jumper cable in and out of the jacks several times, and/or, just leave a short cable plugged in. If this does not help, an amp tech is your best bet.

Agreed. The FX loop jacks can and do cause a lot of trouble.
