Anyone know about these? Sound, Playablity versus a real 3/4 size upright? The specific one I am speaking of is a vintage 1960's model.
They are the ideal latin music bass! I had one for several years, which I had modified to play modern jazz, but I sold it to a guy who wanted to get the real[/w] bass for his salsa band. (I put it back in original state when I sold it) You get a thumpy, thud-like tone. Steve Azola and Ray Ramirez are making fine, new renditions of the original BB.
I've seen a few of these modified, with a wooden bridge and K&K or Fishman pickup fitted in place of the aluminum bridge. Gets a slightly more woody sound. They're nice instruments, very playable and pretty rugged. A friend of mine had one in High School... very cool back in '70.
