Ampeg PF-50T with an additional power amp for bigger gigs?

My personal choice to match with the Ampeg, made purely from my TB skimming-powered imagination, would be a Demeter 800D. More wattage than I could ask for, and totally flyweight.

Don't underestimate the number of guys playing live with no cabs. The pf is on my list specifically for the tube di ability.

I don't but their numbers pale in comparison to those using an amp in the traditional way.

As the DI is driven by SS circuitry int's not per se a "Tube DI."

Which DI? I'm talking about the transformer tapped one.

I know it is but there are operational amplifiers that supply the + and - signal to the DI sockets. It's therefore not "full tube" and purists might object.

This thread has got FAR away from my original question about supporting power amps. Any ideas regarding that topic, please suggest. THE DI is awesome, and phat, but that's not what I'm asking help for.

Couldn't you use the Quilter's line in?

There are a plethora of light weight two space Class D power amps out there. I chose Carvin for the power amps for my various systems. That choice has unfortunately become defunct. Look at the offerings from QSC, Crown, Crest and others that have slipped my mind. All are excellent for your requirements. I would think that the Transformer DI on your amp would have enough :juice" to drive a power amp fully. Taken from the OPT, turning up the amps volumes would increase the level out of that port. Post #10 shows how to connect the power amp.

they didn't get along, to my ears. The Quilter wasn't really transparent...very tube like with my rig, in that thenotes had that tube "weight" feel. But too much was a bad thing when running with the PF-50t...IMO.

Tedsalt suggested the Crest Pro Light right off the bat. If I were in your shoes, I'd be looking at one of those models or something from QSC.

I was unable to test. I thought I had XLR->1/4" somewhere, but I can't find it. I t does, however, sound great with a Mesa Subway 210 and 115.

How do you plan to connect PF50 to the power amp? Using the second DI? How do you change xlr to jack input of the power amp?

If I were to buy an amp again to do this same thing, I'd run the PF into a Quilter Bass Block 800.

Hey Tedsalt. Small world. I'm thinking of doing exactly the same thing with my PF-50T, though I'm tossed up between the Quilter 800 and like an Eden World Tour 800. Whatever I get I'm hoping it's good enough that I'm enticed just to use the power amp straight for times I want the full-modern, big-headroom sound. Your post was a couple years ago, do you have any further experience to share?

@Swiss Frank I'm not familiar with the Eden WT800, but I know the BB800 has a Line In on the back. If you were to run the Quilter, connect the PF20T or PF50T Transformer Out to the Line In on the BB800.

I don't see an xlr format Line In on the WT800.

I'm more of a Fender guy, so I don't have the PF20T anymore, and have since picked up a Sonic Farm 2di4 to run as a tube preamp in a similar capacity as the PF20T.

But if you're after that Ampeg sound, that's one way to get it!

If you're not getting enough volume with your PF-50T maybe you need more speaker area / cabinets? I've run a couple Fender 410 Neo cabs and never had any issue there, even outdoors. (There I go with the Fender again).
