Ampeg Portabass

  1. Anybody have any info. on the Portabass offerings? I'm particularly interested in the combos.

Do these things (I think they're solid state, not tube) offer rather clear reproduction of the bass tone (i.e. like a PA or key amp), or do they do more of the vintage Ampeg tube drive thing?

There are two. Both are SS throughout, with a class-D type amplifier.

    PB250 is 250 / 4 ohms single preamp channel

    PB800 is 550 / 4 800 /2 2 preamp channels

The preamps for these are definitely not SVT-like. I would class the PB250 as more of an upright and jazz unit, mostly on a power basis.

The PB800 covers more ground, mostly due to more power, partly due to a slightly different and even more "open" preamp.

So yeah, they are more like the "PA" or keyboard amp style of preamp, similar to others often mentioned here.
