ampeg sb12 portaflex q

  1. looks like my "new to me" swr baby blue II head will be in the shop, so i'd like to use my ampeg sb12 portaflex (fliptop) head with the bb II's extension cab. the cab is 4ohms and i'm pretty sure the ampeg's cab is 8ohms. all the original info printed on the rear of my ampeg has long ago been rubbed off. will it handle the 4ohm cab?

  3. yeah, i'm familiar with fliptops. i bought my sb12's output transformer from them. i thought i'd try here first rather than bother fliptops as i'm not placing an order.

Check the SBs speaker with an ohmmeter. If it is over 4 ohms, it is probably an 8.

Running the amp into the too-low load will make it unhappy if you push it hard. it will put wear on the tubes a bit also.

Since you got the transformer and presumably put it in, you might recall if it has another might have an available and un-used 4 ohm tap that you could connect to for a while.....
