Ampeg svp-bsp vs Ashdown rpm-1

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by fenderbassabuse, Jan 1, 2005.

  1. I'm in the market for a new pre, and have narrowed it down to these two. Which of these can give a fat, warm tube-like growl and a good clean (but not sterile) slap sound?

    Many thanks
  2. ahh the never ending preamp question.

    I've decided to try something completly different:

    Joe Meek VC8 FatHead --> Power Amp --> 4x10 + 1x15
  3. my vote is for the ashdown, just like it more than Ampeg
  4. Another vote for Ashdown, the Ampeg is too dark for slap and funk, ok for rock but a bit to one sounding in my opinion

    :eek: I slap with mine very often. It depends what's going into it though. I run my cirrus just a bit scooped but flat, with the pre pretty much flat, and it sounds great. I do want something else because I rarely use the dirty channel :(

    I use an Ashdown ABM500 EVO (I believe it has the same Pre-amp section as the RPM-1) I get a Gloriuous Slap tone from it. It is not sterile sounding at all. Very rich, detailed and greta tone.
