Check the dates on the potentiometers.

 

you can't tell anything about the age of old ampeg amps by the serial number. you can guess by the design sort of when it was made within a few years, but you have to open it up and look at the volume and tone pots to pinpoint the date better.

really, all he has to do is look for a silver face plate with blue lettering.

 

There's a 71 on the guitar center website. I wonder if they ship overseas . . .

like i said before, you cannot tell the date of that amp by the serial number.

 

The one you have pictured is of the right era. If it sounds good and the price is reasonable I'd buy it.

 

The difference between 6550s and 6146bs in the power section of the early 70s SVTs that I've heard is subtle to my ears.

 

Maybe they don't have a word for "blue lettering" in Italian!
