ampeg svt-7 PRO Startup issues

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Max Schupp, Jun 22, 2020.

  1. Hey guys,
i just bought a new Ampeg SVT-7 PRO and everytime i switch it on, it takes about 5-10 seconds during which the amp is emitting huge audible crackling signal spikes via headphone out and DI out. EDIT: but not via cab
is that normal? or should i return it ?

Best recommendation is to return it. That's obviously not right.

I would return and get another one. Having said that, it doesn’t sound horrible. I probably never hear it, if it’s just Di and headphone out in the first 5 secs. It takes me much longer to strap on my bass and headphones...

I missed the part about it just being only the DI and Headphone output... that could be entirely normal if it's only a second or two, and the same may occur at power down. This is a question to ask Ampeg's technical support folks.

If anybody has one and can test this way with headphones, that would be another good data point.

You found the hidden drum machine feature. ;-)

  12. The amp does take a few seconds to start up - that part is normal.

  13. I know they did in the early days but do recent models have issues?

FWIW it's one of the best amps I've played through.

I have a Rev F update after two breakdowns. Has been every bit as solid as my GK 400RB. My 7Pro has been going strong for awhile now !

I had a 7 Pro a while back and had the opportunity to use it a few times where I used the DI out and the headphone out (only once did I use both. Don’t remember all the details of the occasion).

I never heard a crackle or any noise at all when I powered it up. It did take several seconds to “boot up”, as it were, but all the outputs were clean and quiet as it did so.

That long power-up caused me some considerable angst for a few moments the first time I powered it up right out of the box. I was reaching for the power button to cycle the power when I heard it click on. I cycled it several times to make sure the long power-up was normal.

I remember liking the 7 Pro a lot at the time.

  16. Hey guys, my dealer just contacted ampeg tech support and ut turns out its bormal behavior. Its a protection relay clicking a couple of times before powering on. He said if it truly gets problematic its under warranty so i can use it as is :)

I know some amps will have anywhere from a 5 to 20-second delay upon power-up that is usually mentioned in the manual.

Ampeg makes mention of the power switch is more of an "on/standby", with a live circuit in standby. I'm not an engineer by any means but, I speculate why there is a power delay with some class A/B and D amps. If you're connecting your amp to a P/A or audio controller via DI, make sure the amp is powered on before you connect and power up the P/A and external device to avoid damage.

The sound your getting from the headphones is normal. I would avoid powering up the amp with the headphones connected unless the master is turned down or the amp is muted.

Lots of good info in the manual. :)

Mine does this on the DI output sometimes when I start it up. it's at whatever volume level the house is on at the time. Kind of goes pop, pop, pop, pop in the house while warming up like a singer alliterating P's on a mic with no pop filter, then full sound comes on and no problems at all. Mine only pops about 4 times when it does this. I've never thought it was a defect. It never occurred odd to me; I just assumed it was part of warming up because it stops as quick as it starts and is always done before sound comes into my cabinet.

  19. Mute switch could come in handy here?

Only if it's located after the source of the noise in the signal flow.
