I am aiming to purchase an Ampeg stack in the near future. I want an SVT 810E cab pushed by an SVT350H head (solid state). Will this work well? This will cost about $1600. If you have a different suggestion (still in this price range), please let me know. I'd like to stick to Ampeg. I also heard that the wattage of Ampeg solid state heads is over-rated and "grossly inflated." Is this true? If so, by how much are they overrated? I play a wide variety of music, if that helps determine suggestions. Thanks, Dan
also consider the ampeg pro series of heads, such as the SVT-2, 3 or 4 Pro. They go great with Ampeg 810E's but may be a bit more expensive. Also, keep an eye out for Ampeg B2R's, they are the same as SVT-350H's only in different casing.
Hey Dan, you live in Coral Springs? Thats cool, live right around you, or atleast used. I'm up in West Lake Worth now, but I used to be in Boca. Anyways, I'm going to get a new Ampeg SVT4PRO soon, and an 8x10 cab because I think they sound the best with my 5-string. It's something about the porting in it that makes it better than 2 4x10s together. Anyways, you should go to Sam Ash, Mars, and Guitar Center, if you haven't already been doing so. Later
if you look at the schematics on the webpage... you'll see that their 810's and 410's are baffled into seperate 210 compartments... and only the bottom one is ported on the 810Pro, and the 410hlf.. none of the other cabs are ported at all (most of them at least) that's why ampeg is so punchy. and why buy an svt4Pro, and not and svp-pro with a poweramp?
hmm... the svp-pro with poweramp sounds interesting... would this cost more than an svt-4 pro? how much do poweramps cost and what is a good brand? how much power?
If you look carefully, you should be able to find a vintage SVT head (pre-SLM) and a used 8x10 for around $1400.
I picked up a used SVP-Pro for $200, and I use a 1000 watt power amp from Carvin for about $400 I think. 1000 watts of tube power (ok, kind of) for $600 is not a bad deal at all.
