an a-hole wondering about f-holes...

  1. Please don't kick me if this thread has been there before as I am pretty unaware in regards to the double bass, plus I haven't been member to this forum for very long. So...

...why do the holes in a double bass have the shape of an "f"? Couldn't it also be any other shape? Is it only for visual reasons? Does God exist? Who invented the liquid soap and why?...

back when they were viols they had "C" holes some time when the violin famly was young 1600's? it was felt that "F" holes sounded better than "C" holes.

I saw a picture of a bass that had a round hole under the fingerboard up by the neck ala guitar and "F" holes to boot.

I would guess that almost anything you can think of has been tryed at one time or another.
  3. ...amazing! Thanks, Joe! :)
