I am as one might call a newbie. heh laying that out first.

as i was changing my bass strings for the first time ever today, i noticed there seemed to be some gunky stuff all over the neck of my bass. i scratched some of it off with my nail and it was a brown/grey colored crusty material.

i just wanna know what the heck it is, and what to do to get it to go away. and i suppose keep it away.

    thanks alot
  2. It's dirt and grease. Clean your fretboard, wash your hands.

That's just dirt collected over time from your fingers. There have been a few threads dealing with this topic. Try this or this one.
