Havent read the article in the Guardian yet but I read some stuff over here this morning that stated he was going to plead "self defense"? Oh brother... the guy is nuts, absolutely nuts

Let him testify in court, and then lock him up and throw away the key.

  3. It's a live updating report, so it'll give a timeline of what's going on right now.

Straight off the bat he stated that he doesn't recognise the authority of the court. I'd say he's a prime example of someone needing the death penalty, something I generally don't agree with, but I simply cannot see any mitigating circumstances here (even thought it'd probably be claimed he's off his rocker).

i find it particularly disturbing that someone like this is only facing, at most 20 or so years in prison.

it seems to me (as an outside observer who is probably too ignorant of the reality of the situation to warrant having any opinion, let alone a strong one :D ) that a lot of european countries have very relaxed punishments for crimes committed - i wonder if some of our euro posters could chime in with their thoughts.

and IGAM, i agree - if this guy were in the u.s. he would most definitely get the death penalty (i'm actually not a supporter of the death penalty in the U.S. - i find its uneven application across ethnic and social boundaries indicative of a fundamentally unjust, and therefore inappropriate, expression of justice, despite how it may seem warranted in many crimes).

There is no doubt in my mind that he will never be a free man again. Even though 21 years is maximum here. They can keep him behind bars for life to protect society.

That's what I had heard as well - the max is 20 years in Norway but before he can be released after that term there is some sort of "evaluation" which is a formality. If, at that evaluation he's declared dangerous, then back to prison he goes. He will get life.

Think this is one of the first times he is showing emotions

  8. I couldn't comment on Norway's legal system, they all vary so much from country to country, all I know is that Norway is one of the few countries in Europe that has abolished the Life Sentence.

In some ways I find it commendable that some countries have moved away from Life imprisonment, trying to focus on reforming instead of just seperation from society. But then, that isn't going to be the solution for everyone. It's good to see that they can still take special measures if someone is still deemed a risk, as odin70 has pointed out.

I bet the court saw me on my bike on the evidence film today. I could almost touch the car two minutes before it exploded.

  12. Were you not in a building just a few blocks away when it went off? I seem to remember a thread you posted about that right after it happened.

  14. Yes, it is unlikely that we're ever gonna see Mr. Breivik walking freely on the streets in Norway. We have something called "fovaring"(eng:custody) and he will probably be behind bars for the remainder of his life. Only issue that at stake in the trial really is the question of accountability.

Either way, he will be locked up for the rest of his life.

  17. And under close observation.
