Angry songs that don't sound angry

What are some lyrically angry songs that don't have angry sounding instrumentation to back it? Alanis Morissette's "You ought to know" comes to mind. "Hell knows no furry like a woman scorned", isn't that the truth! Reading those lyrics I would think that kind of rage or anger would call for the instrumentation of Metallica's "Sad But True".

  2. "Free Four" by Pink Floyd come to mind.

The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You suffle in gloom in the sickroom
And talk to yourself till you die.
Life is a short, warm moment
And death is a long cold rest.
You get your chance to try
In the twinkling of an eye:
Eighty years, with luck, or even less.
So all aboard for the American tour,
And maybe you'll make it to the top.
    And mind how you go.
I can tell you, because I know.
You may find it hard to get off.
You are the angel of death
And I am the dead man's son.
And he died like a mole in a fox hole.
And everyone is still in the run.
And who is the master of fox hounds?
And who says the hunt has begun?
And who calls the tune in the courtroom?
And who beats the funeral drum?
The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You suffle in gloom in the sickroom
And talk to yourself till you die.

Full disclosure, I'm a certified Fender technician working in a music store that carries Fender, Yamaha, and Ibanez products among others.
Almost anything from the first three Police albums. Or The Smiths.

"It Never Rains" by Dire Straits has a real melodic and upbeat organ intro, but the lyrics get pretty dark and vindictive towards the end.

Most songs by the beautiful south. Hidden amongst the sugar coated melodies and zippy music lies twisted and bitter lyrics.

No Surprises by Radiohead is mostly despair but it does have some anger in it. The song sounds like a child's lullaby.

    Yeah, that.

  11. Bad Moon Rising. It sounds happy and boppy, even though Fogerty is quoted as saying it was about "the apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us."

When you read the lyrics, it's very hard to understand why they recorded it with the mood they did (except that it made it a huge hit).

I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
    I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
    I see bad times today.

    Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

    I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
    I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

    Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
    All right!

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

    Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

    Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

    I'm with you!

"Jump, Jump, Jump" from Rick Derringer's All American Boy. Dark subject matter for a rather pleasant sounding Pop tune, IMO.

You Outta Know sounds pretty angry to me too. Flea plays bass on that...something I learned recently from here. Awesome bass line.

Tons of Steely Dan fits this category.

  15. Not an 'angry' tune really - but Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind is the happiest 'you are dying from drug addiction' song I've ever heard!

    Instrumentally, No, I don't.

  17. Most Bob Dylan songs from 1963ish - 1966 and then interspersed beyond that. Most notably Positively 4th Street, Desolation Row, and It's All Over Now Baby Blue.

Also, The Division Bell by Pink Floyd is an entire angry album masked by that sweet dreamy atmosphere...

  20. Listen to the Chris Cornell or Brian Cook version of Billy Jean by Michael Jackson. Never knew how deep the song was until i heard it done acoustically.
