Just the facts...Last night my setup was basic (bass - pedal tuner - Ampeg SVT 4 Pro). The sound guy wanted a direct signal (XLR) vs micing my cab. There was no signal to the FOH when he connected to the XLR out from the 4 Pro. What could be wrong with the XLR output? This is not my usual setup. I usually run a SansAmp or Line 6 Helix.
Set your amp up and verify that it wasn't a problem on the sound guy's side first, mis-patching and mis-routing is much more common than a bad DI out.
Line Level Out, number 16 in the manual, it's right in the middle of the 4 push buttons. It controls several of the outputs out the back end, including the XLR. RTFM
I am actually shocked the sound guy didn't look for a line level knob himself, or already know that amp.
I don't really think it's his job to know the gear of every musician and performer that comes through his venue.
I didn’t say it was his job to know every piece of gear that he sees. The point was, and I can’t believe I have to explain this, it was a comment about how popular these amps are and how often sound men find themselves hooking up to one. I’m not a sound guy, and I’ve never owned this amp, but the first thought that popped into my head reading the OP was “did anyone look for a line level pot?” Which was exactly what I posted. It wasn’t a slight against sound men, or even that one. Just surprised it wasn’t given a thought seeing as how it’s been a thing on amps for several decades.
What I have noticed about many soundmen, they just say no signal coming out and asking to use their DI box. They are busy, and no time or interests to start troubleshooting individual gear unless absolutely necessary.
This whole thing is just stupid. The knob is right on the front of the amp. Plain as day. If you looked at the knobs at all, you'd see it. It's right next to the volume.
Hahaha. Word. I just can't help invisioning the OP going, "man, this amp sounds terrible! The sound is so thin, what on earth could be the problem?" Or, "Oh no! There's no sound! Chalk this one up to another 4 pro failure!" Hahaha! Sorry Cal. Hahaha. Just where my mind goes dogg. It happens bro. Mute switches used to throw me for a loop. I'd figured it out, but it'd leave me scratching my head for a minute. Now, it's always the first thing I check if there's no sound.
That's a bit weird from Ampeg not to put the knob in the back. I have played the svt4 for many years and always felt it was a too complicated amp.
The sound guy should have known to turn the send level up. It isn’t the job of the talent to sort out technical issues. It makes you wonder what kind of mixing they did.
