I went to my local guitar center today and saw the 4 and 5 string bongos on the wall. I went over, grabbed the four, and plugged it into an svt 350 and ampeg 6x10 hlf. It sounded GREAT. It also played really well... I own a late eightys stingray. I couldnt stop thinking how much better this sounded than my ray. The only complaint i have is the neck PU makes some slap hard to do, but im sure i can get used to it. Plus i have a roscoe that i can get nice slap tones out of. The manager is a good friend of mine and offered to let me trade my ray for the bongo if I really wanted to. Im gonna think on it, but I just wanted to ask opinions, epesh of bovinehost (having both basses and all). Thanks!

    I'd do it.

The Bongo can give you Stingray tone if you want it and it does so without compromise.

The Stingray can't give you Bongo tone no matter what you do.

But - remember what they say about opinions!

Good stuff. Do most bongos sound the same? Because im really thinking id like a red or cherry burst or something else before an orange, althought i really like the orange. I just dont want to lose the magic of this current one hehe. How long would it take musicman to ship one to georgia if its already premade with the color?

I forgot to ask if this was the dual humbucker model.....that's the only one I really have experience with.

There are dual humbucker, single humbucker, and the single coil neck and bridge humbucker models
    available, I think.

I played a Bongo for the first time yesterday. I was favorably impressed. Nice flexible EQ, and good solid and consistent playability and feel. Wierd looking, but good physical balance, and good string balance too. All in all a pretty nice bass. I played a dark gray one with dual humbuckers.

I actually like the shape believe it or not. I just am trying do decide between my ray and the bongo for my main rock bass. I got my roscoe for pretty much everything else, but the bongo sounds reallllly good...

There are a number of pickup configurations available, including piezo with all configs.

At first, I was asking myself why anyone would get the single humbucker Bongo instead of just buying a Stingray. Then I started fooling with the onboard EQ and wondered no more.

I definitely favor the dual humbucker Bongo over the other MM models. I took my Sterling out to play Sunday night and it's still a great bass, but I found myself missing that big extra WHUMP from those two 'buckers.

I can't believe it, frankly. All these years of Stingrays and here I am, flogging this odd looking thing.....I'm as surprised as anyone else, but you simply cannot argue with the tone of these basses!

  15. You guys are gonna make me buy one against my will! :D

I'm afraid to go into Sam Ash for a set of strings; I feel that I'm going to take one home with me. I want to wait until at least March before buying another bass.

Can you read the nametag on this pirate?

  17. # 1) I can't read the name tag, sorry. My eyes aren't what they used to be.

    # 2) All kidding aside, these basses are starting to look really good to me.

I think I'm slowly but surely being pulled towards the planet Bongo, and Mr. Scot can't get any impulse power!

    Thanks, Bovine.:)

That's Sterling Ball funkifying on that Bongo.

And you know, I would think you guys would have a bit more self control about these GAS issues. I mean, come on, we all know that Bongos are ugly, the pickguard looks like a toilet seat and the body is basswood.

They do SOUND good and they are KILLER players, but really, what's important here?
