So I was in GC today looking for some strings and wandered over to the bass cave to see if the $650 Warwick rumor was true... it is. Anyways, while talking to the sales guy about the unreal deals that have been going on, he mentioned that he just sold an SVT6PRO and it rang up at $499! That one was the last one, so I could not verify it, but I don't think that he was joking. So lets see, here is just what I know about: Peavey VB-2: $399. Markbass TA 501: $499. SVT6PRO: $499. Warwick Corvette 5: $639. ... and there was an Ibanez SRX500-like bass (IDK the model, it was one of those GC-only models) for $195 too. What is going on here?! None of these "specials" are marked on the amps. He said that the SVT4PRO was also "cheap" but I did not have the heart to ASK because I would have BOUGHT, and I certainly do not NEED... I am thinking that it was either $449 or $499 too. Why is everything so cheap, but not marked or advertised?! Ox.
I just got a Peavey Scorpio DE bass (Dave Ellefson model) for $130 that is in perfect condition at GC. List was $899 on it, the only thing missing was a gig bag and a lock of Dave's hair embedded in the finish. It had two price tags, one for $540 and one for $130. I asked, is the $130 correct, they said yes, and I bought it immediately without even playing it and thought I was stealing it as I walked out the door. ~S
Which GC is that. I live in Atlanta, and I might need to force myself stop by there more often. I usually just stick with the local Sam Ash.
The one I went to was El Toro, CA. Take a look, if your GC has it anyway at the riser with misc gear on it as soon as you enter the store. I saw more deals on guitars/basses on that that anywhere else in the store. I also think they were just trying to clear inventory for the start of the new year, but it was after the 1st that I bought my bass. ~S
I saw 2 of those scorpio basses at my GC a few months back for $99! They were gone before I could buy 'em. These prices make me wonder if the gear is B-stock or scratch 'n dent returns or something. The basses almost looked used.
Yeah I wondered the same thing, the action on it was low, neck smooth, frets just dandy, the finish was perfect and there doesn't seem to be any problem with the electronics. Maybe there is something else going on that I don't know about, but so far so good. Or Dave Mustain has his hand in this... ~S
Im a manager at GC and all of these deals are true!! Pretty much its just a clearance sale to move all the old gear and get some new stuff in from NAMM.
Hey Guys, don't look now but the economy is totally crap. "Nobody" has money. This is why guys are selling the spare bass, extra amp cabs... and places like GC are having inventory reduction sales all over the country. Just look around the MF and GC websites and think about how many MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars those guys are sitting on JUST in the warehouse!!!! Let alone the stores all across the country. The warehouse with its associated Internet business is VERY LOW overhead when compared to all those darn stores in classy strip malls all over the country. They want to retain the local presence as music is one of those I need to hold it types of businesses... But they have to sell a lot of product a day to keep the lights on on 3500 feet of retail and having 4 or 5 guys running around stamping receipts. SO they are smart enough to throw out some loss leaders or sell at cost to move people into the stores. Look what the VB-2 deal did here on TB... If they get stale buyers back into the store, they will sell cords, strings, maybe even a new guitar, bass or drum set... Its that or start closing stores and they need to weather this storm. BOB
Looking at the big picture huh? I was figuring it was going to be more mysterious than that like the GC ceo is under a spell from Sauroman or something.
It was the Gwinnett GC. They had like 4 SVT4PROs left. I couldn't bring myself to ask... because that would have meant that I would buy an amp that I did not need. FYI... You need them to look the price up! Everything is tagged at the normal price (or a crappier sale price). Ox.
The "clearance riser" at mine wasn't so great. I mean it was o.k., but nothing that would make me buy something that I wouldn't ordinarily. You need to ASK about the prices. In Atlanta at least, they are not marked and typically the associates don't know. They guy I talked to SWORE the Warwick was $1300. I finally encouraged him to scan it... guess who was right... I could have picked him up off the floor... Ox.
